Barry Martin is a highly regarded artist with long associations, both as a student and as a tutor, with many prestigious London art schools including Goldsmiths, Central St. Martin’s, The Slade and The Royal Academy. Much of Barry’s work is inspired by the concept of movement; something inextricably linked with all life, the flow of thoughts in the mind and the actions performed in games, particularly chess.

My aim was to design a set that created different colour structures during play; as the position on the board changes, so the arrangement of colours shifts. The kings’ colours are indicative of their royal rank and the queens’ bluey- green, represents her mystery and esoteric associations from the ancient tradition.”
