Caio Locke‘s artistic development has been influenced by the process of etching and his childhood memories of London and Rio de Janeiro. His works are conjured from his imagination and combine mathematical precision with abstract thought. He uses colour and form to express his personal response to the meeting of external and interior worlds. In this sense, the process has become a meditation, visionary in its merging of the spiritual and intellectual.

I considered the iconic symbolism inherent in the dialectically opposed sides. The pieces each contain an exterior architectural facade, with eight arches to illuminate an interior world. White is represented by colours which denote majesty through spiritual elevation, Black by colours symbolising work and industry. The hint of red is in reference to Bismarck’s “Blood and Iron” imperative to progress. The two sides become metaphors for competing human ideologies.
